A standard 12-lead EKG records the strength and timing of electrical signals as they travel through the heart. The tracing can show heart rate, rhythm and electrical-conduction patterns that the ordering provider may use as part of a broader clinical evaluation.

The test is performed while you rest. Small adhesive electrodes are placed on the chest, arms and legs and connected to the EKG machine. The machine records electrical activity; it does not send electricity into the body.

Important: Hitchcock Direct Imaging records the EKG and sends the tracing and automated machine statement to the ordering provider. Hitchcock does not provide a separate physician or cardiologist interpretation. The ordering provider is responsible for the final clinical interpretation.

    Ask any licensed healthcare provider to fax your imaging order to (423) 769-0020. You do not need to be a Hitchcock patient.

  • SCHEDULING

    We contact CT and ultrasound patients to arrange a convenient appointment. X-ray patients may walk in during imaging hours after we receive the order.

  • GET RESULTS, PAY ONE PRICE

    Pay the published all-inclusive price at your visit. A board-certified radiologist interprets the study, and the report is generally sent to the ordering provider within 48–72 hours—often sooner.

What Information Can a Resting EKG Provide?

A standard 12-lead EKG captures the heart’s electrical activity during a brief period at rest. The ordering provider may use the tracing to evaluate:

  • Heart rate
  • Whether the rhythm appears regular or irregular
  • Timing and conduction of electrical signals
  • Certain rhythm or conduction abnormalities
  • Changes that may require clinical correlation or additional testing
  • Baseline electrical activity before a procedure or medication decision

An EKG is a brief snapshot. Heart-rhythm changes that come and go may not appear during the recording, and a normal tracing does not exclude every heart condition.

Who Interprets the EKG?

The EKG machine produces an automated statement along with the tracing. Automated statements are computer-generated and are not a final medical interpretation.

Hitchcock Direct Imaging sends the complete tracing and machine statement to the healthcare provider who ordered the test. The ordering provider is responsible for reviewing the EKG, interpreting it in clinical context and discussing the result or next steps with the patient.

Are EKG and ECG the same test?
Yes. EKG and ECG are two abbreviations for an electrocardiogram. Both refer to a test that records the heart’s electrical activity.
What type of EKG do you perform?
We perform a standard resting 12-lead EKG. We are not advertising exercise stress testing, Holter monitoring or long-term event monitoring as part of this service.
How much does an EKG cost?

Do I need a healthcare provider’s order?
Yes. A licensed healthcare provider must order the EKG. Ask the provider to fax the order to (423) 769-0020.
Does Hitchcock interpret the EKG?
No. We record the tracing and send it, along with the machine-generated statement, to the ordering provider. That provider supplies the clinical interpretation.
Is the machine statement a final interpretation?
No. The machine statement is automated and must be reviewed by the ordering healthcare provider in the context of the patient’s symptoms, history and examination.
Is an EKG painful?
No. Adhesive electrodes record the heart’s electrical activity. The machine does not send electricity into your body. Some people may notice minor skin irritation or brief discomfort when the adhesive patches are removed.
How should I prepare?
Wear clothing that allows access to the chest, arms and lower legs. Avoid applying lotions or oils that may prevent the electrodes from adhering properly. Some chest hair may need to be clipped for good electrode contact.
How long does an EKG take?
The recording itself is brief once the electrodes are positioned. Allow additional time for check-in and electrode placement.
Can a resting EKG detect every heart-rhythm problem?
No. A resting EKG records only a short period. Symptoms or rhythm changes that occur intermittently may require a Holter monitor, event monitor or another test ordered by a clinician.
Can I use this EKG instead of seeking emergency care?
No. Chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, sudden weakness or other potentially serious symptoms require prompt medical evaluation. An outpatient EKG recording is not a substitute for emergency assessment.
How do I receive the result?
The tracing is sent to the ordering provider, who is responsible for interpreting it and communicating the result to you.
